Week 3 : Issues of sustainable development

 Assalamualaikum w.b.t everyone !

Welcome back to my blog! I am grateful for the time you have invested in reading my blog post 😊

In week 3, we have learnt about issues in the current development. Nowadays, our world is not sustainable enough because we have grown the economy but forget about our environmental sustainability. It is useless if we have development but many things are affected such as our nature, animals and also human beings. It is because the longer we continue consuming more resources than the Earth can sustainably provide and produce more wastes than it can absorb, the less able the Earth can meet humanity's resource needs in the future.

There are six types of pollution but the most health concerning one is Water, Air, and Soil pollution. Pollution disrupts the balance in our ecosystem which affects not only our lives but plants, animals, and trees as well. The harmful toxic mixtures that are in the air are the result of air pollution. Water pollution is where the bodies of waters are contaminated which is not good for drinking, bathing or washing. Soil pollution is where the soil is contaminated by harmful substances. Each pollutant has different ways of affecting the environment such to where it is bad for our health.

Sadly, to say, this also happened in my lovely hometown. On the first week's reflection's blog, I do share about the beauty of my hometown at Tawau, Sabah. Unfortunately, some part of my hometown also has that water pollution crisis. Laziness and carelessness have bred a culture of habitual littering. Carelessness has made people throw rubbish anywhere without thinking about the consequences of their actions. Many people do not realize or underestimate the negative impacts of littering on the environment especially along the sea, lakes and river.

However, have you ever heard the idiom “ Every cloud has a silver lining? ” / Semua yang berlaku ada hikmahnya.

To me, this idiom is really suitable for everyone, because no one will ever have a smooth going life forever, it always has thick and thin no matter how good you are in planning your life.  This is really related to what happened today when the COVID‐19 pandemic is still preoccupying much of our professional and personal lives, it is hard to see any silver in the current situation. However, when we reflect, we should see that there are in fact some good things which could come out of the challenging times in which we are living today. I find it helpful to first think about the changes we have all come to regard as the new normal and then consider which of these we might want to retain when, one day, we return to the old normal.

Alhamdulillah, during movement control order (MCO)/lockdowns have improved our air quality around the world! (isn’t it amazing ?)

Air pollutant index in Malaysia during MCO

With many factories and businesses closed, combined with fewer cars on the road and fewer planes in the sky, our natural environment is recovering slowly.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused industrial activity to shut down and cancelled flights and other journeys, slashing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution around the world. If there is something positive to take from this terrible crisis, it could be that it’s offered a taste of the air we might breathe in a low-carbon future.

Last but not least, in week 3, I have realized that In order to fix our pollution problem, we need to expand our knowledge of nature and develop understanding of human behavior. It is vital to understand the different types of pollution and how it is affecting our environment that we live in.

That's all from me for now, Thank you !
